Fuck yeah bobs and afros.

Oh hi, I need to blog more.  I've been incredibly busy with the salon and moving, which is a good thing.  I also change my panties more often than I update my blog, I think that too is a good thing.
Anyways, I took photos of a couple haircuts I was particularly happy with.  I'll probably hate myself in a few days for posting them, but enjoy!

Diana and her fantastic curls.  I always cut curly hair dry and picked out.  I didn't have to do much to style it because it sits so nicely, but I used MELU SERUM by Davines through the ends to rehydrate her naturally dry texture and add some piecy-ness.

Melu Serum:

Lightweight cherry oil based product that seals and strengthens the cuticle.  It smells delicious, and if you buy it you're helping the environment because Davines donates to Lifegate, which funds eco-friendly and fair trade companies .  The polar bears are dying and it's all your fault.  Buy hair product and save them.

Corinne!  A fantastic miss who replied to one of my online ads for bob models.  She has thick strawberry blond hair, and a love for Thurston Moore. What else could I ask for in a client?  I cut her a clean, sheik, one length bob.  Sometimes simple is better.  I didn't use any product to style her, she has nearly perfect hair that blow-dries smooth and shiny.  I did use Davines MELU SERUM to seal her ends though!

If you want to have your haircut, email me at dylanhoney@gmail.com .  You'll have fun.  I do backflips sometimes.

HAIRCUT - Angela Asistio

Today I cut my friend Angela's hair at the salon.  She had a haircut that had been grown out for over 6 months, which on top of looking unpolished also comes with plenty of natural breakage and an overall dry appearance.  Solution? Get your hair cut often, and it'll be easier to look at yourself in the morning.

BEFORE:

Angela has plenty of course, thick, beautiful hair(yay for Filipino genetics!).  However it was looking dry and unkempt due to her 8 month grow out.

The ends of her hair were thinned out too much from her previous cut. The cut was also unintentionally uneven. Thinning shears on coarse hair is generally a bad idea in my opinion.  It causes the shorter, thinned out bits to frizz up and cause an unhealthy appearance.

AFTER:

Even, solid, lush and healthy hair!  I evened up her layering and cut a good 3 inches off the ends to get rid of that thin appearance.  Her layers are soft, long, and natural, and the weight in them keep her coarse hair weighed down.  This hair cut also is convenient for her lifestyle, because she doesn't have to do anything to it for it to look nice.

Product I used for her smooth blow dry:

L'Oreal Smooth Velours

I use about a quarter size in my palm, and run it mid-lengths through ends on towel dried hair before blow drying.  This cream consistency product is ideal for medium coarse hair.  It helps smooth out a blow dry without weighing it down.

L'Oreal Liss Ultime

A silicon-based smoothing serum that works on medium to extremely coarse hair.  It helps the blow dry with shine and hold for a few days.

Angela also works with KXSC Radio, so if you like good music check it out online, or if you live in Los Angeles 1560AM in your car!

If you have any questions please ask! Or if you'd like to book an appointment, contact GalvinBenjamin Salon and ask to book an appointment with yours truly.

FALLING IN REVERSE - The Drug in Me is You

Did hair for Falling In Reverse's music video!  I styled the band which was really a wonderful experience.  They're all such nice and talented guys.

A few people have asked me about Ronnie Radke's hair (The singer), so I thought I'd post the essentials on how I styled his hair for the video.

I wet his hair down and applied Densite thickening spray by L'oreal:
It's a light spray that swells up the hair cuticle, making it appear fuller.

I also spritzed in some of Bumble&Bumble's Surf Spray for added texture:

After drying his hair smooth, I flat ironed it pin straight.  Once his hair was dead straight, I added Schwarzkopf OSIS "DUST IT" powder mainly to his roots and a bit through the mid shaft.  OSIS "DUST IT" powder is a really effective product that adds volume and a matte texture for a gritty, grungy, look.

I back combed the roots all over his head and hair sprayed each section.  This gave it an over all fuller appearance and gave me more options as to which pieces I wanted to keep teased up.  For all the bits I wanted down, I lightly pushed them down with the end of a silver rat tail comb.
And voila! Sexy, messy, and stylish hair.
Feel free to ask any questions!

inspiration for the week

Once a week I want to post a few images that inspire me one way or another.

  CHANEL F/W2011.
Shot by Karl Lagerfeld.
I enjoy the raw feeling in this photo, and like the direction Lagerfeld is taking this collection in.

DAVID BOWIE(DUH.)
My favorite musician.  He inspires me everyday.

I really love her looks in all of her photos! Her hair is pretty badass here.
 PHOTOGRAPHER REMI LAMANDE
Styling is amazing for this photograph.

 DESIGNER RONAN PECHER
Really talented designer.  Hair is outstanding for this collection.

 TWIN MAGAZINE S/S2011
I'm really obsessed with faded out/no eyebrows right now.

Model Wang Xiao.
Her hair cut is incredibly cool(obviously.)

Nick Cave circa The Birthday Party.
I oddly enough get a few hair cut requests referencing Nick Cave.
I'm happy I have cultured clients.

for the sun babies - DAVINES

Summer is here!(obviously.)

Along with summer comes barbecues, pool parties, laying out, the beach, picnics, and for most of us being in the sunshine as much as possible.  Unfortunately, the wonderful sun you bask in and water you splash about in takes a serious toll on your hair and skin.

I've been using a line that is new to me called DAVINES, all of their products are at least 85% natural, their packaging is eco-friendly, they match their pollution output with planting trees once a year to balance out their carbon footprint, and they also donate to a company called LIFEGATE that helps fund other fair trade and eco-friendly businesses.  But most importantly, their products are incredibly effective.

They have several different lines, but since it's summer I wanted to blog about SU in particular.  SU is a line targeted towards protecting and nourishing hair and skin that is frequently exposed to the sun.  All of these products have vitamin E, UVA, and UVB filters.  They all also protect hair that is artificially colored which the sun and water(pool chlorine or sea salt) can alter drastically or gradually with exposure.

SU: CREME

Purpose: A moisturizing creme that protects the hair against solar radiations, sea salt, and chlorine, keeping it smooth and well hydrated.

Active ingredients:
Argan Oil: An Omega-3 and Omega-6 rich oil that also has antioxidants and Vitamin E.
Wheat Proteins: Protect hair from chlorine, sea salt, and solar rays.
Vitamin E, UVA, and UVB Filters:  Protect the hair against free radicals, solar rays, and environmental pollution.
Hairsphere(R): A patented system of microscopic molecules rich in fatty acids.  These molecules attach to the hair easily and stay in after rinsing.

Use it: Pump a quarter size of the creme into your palms and apply all over dry hair, focusing on mid lengths and ends.  Do not rinse!  You can apply it through out the day if you are in the sun for a long amount of time.  I suggest applying it before you get outside.

SU: OIL

Purpose: A hydrating oil rich in antioxidants for the body and hair.  Not only does it protect your skin and hair from chlorine, sea salt, and solar rays, but it happens to be an anti-aging agent as well.  My favorite aspect of this product is that it intensifies your tan while protecting you naturally.

Active Ingredients:
Argan Oil: An Omega-3 and Omega-6 rich oil that also has antioxidants and Vitamin E.

Jojoba Oil: Hydrates and softens the hair and skin, while giving it shine.

Vitamin E, UVA, and UVB Filters:  Protect the hair against free radicals, solar rays, and environmental pollution. It also protects your hair color against the sun and water.

COMPARE TO: Moroccan Oil.  I absolutely detest Moroccan Oil.  It's incredibly heavy(even though they came out with a light line) and it's artificial Argan Oil.  The artificial oil actually stains your hair color, which will give it a brassy appearance over time.

Use It: Spray it on the hair(preferably mid-length to ends) and body before sun exposure.  You can reapply it frequently while your out.  I like the light spray feature opposed to Moroccan Oil's glass bottle.  It goes on more evenly and lightly, and you don't risk pouring too much of it out, a problem I frequently had with Moroccan Oil.

SU: SHAMPOO

Purpose: A replenishing and moisturizing daily shampoo for hair exposed to sea salt, chlorine, and sun.  It's incredibly delicate(why it's good daily) and A-OK for colored hair.

Active Ingredients:

Almond Proteins:  INCREDIBLY moisturizing.  The proteins settle on the hair and skin, which protects and moisturizes while washing.

Olive Oil Derivative: Extra moisture and protection.

Hairsphere(R): A patented system of microscopic molecules rich in fatty acids.  These molecules attach to the hair easily and stay in after rinsing.

Use It: Massage onto damp hair(while showering/bathing), rinse and repeat if you'd like.  This product is really good after sun exposure, noticeably softening the hair.

SU: CONDITIONER

Purpose: A light, anti-aging, conditioning, fluid for hair destroyed by chlorine, sea salt, or sun exposure.  Noticeably softens the hair and cancels static caused by damage.

Active Ingredients:
Walnut Extract: Protects against free radicals and adds plenty of shine.

Conditioning silicons and polymers: Fight static and make hair soft, allowing easy comb through and easier styling.

Panthenol: A Vitamin-B5 rich compound which helps deeply moisturize and polish the hair.

Use It: Spray on hair after shampooing from root to end, do not rinse.

SU: PAK

Purpose: One of my favorite protective and moisturizing masks of all times.  It restores the hair from the inside out almost instantly even after rinsing.

Active Ingredients:

Almond Butter: Incredibly nourishing thanks to a high saponifiable fraction(a fancy term for something rich in vitamins and antioxidants).  It protects and moisturizes the hair.  The oil in almonds coat the hair shaft and protects it from external damage.

Argan Oil: An Omega-3 and Omega-6 rich oil that also has antioxidants and Vitamin E.

Hairsphere(R): A patented system of microscopic molecules rich in fatty acids.  These molecules attach to the hair easily and stay in after rinsing.

High Molecular Weight Silicone: A conditioning and protecting film that coats the hair.

Hydro-Creatine: It comes from an acidic amino, which allows it to retie the bonds between broken chains of amino acids in the hair shaft.  It increases the hair strength and elasticity over all, which prevents breakage.

Use It: After shampooing, towel dry the hair well and apply the mask all over.  Leave on for at least 5 minutes and rinse well.

SU also carries a few other products for body and face but I just covered the hair care portion.  If you have any more questions, please ask me about it!  You can find all DAVINES products online or come visit me at GalvinBenjamin and pick them up here!

oh, hi

People have been bugging me to make a blog about the things I do.  Maybe because they're tired of hearing my voice when I tell them what I've been up to, and they would rather read about it.

I'm Dylan, I'm 20, I was born and raised in Hollywood/Silverlake area in Los Angeles.  I love doing hair(what most of my posts would be about, I suppose), and I'll be posting most of my hair adventures in the salon or on set here.  I really hate looking at my work, but maybe this is a way for me to get over it and accept that it's what I do and people enjoy it enough to hire me.

I work under some of the most talented and kindest people on the planet at GalvinBenjamin.  I learn everyday and I'm incredibly grateful for that.
